Jet fuel detection: The primary military fuel for land-based military aircraft is JP-8. JP-5 was developed by the U.S. Navy for shipboard service.

Jet fuel detection origins

Jet propellant (JP) fuels, used in military and civilian aircraft, are complex mixtures of aliphatic and aromatic hydrocarbons made by blending various distillate stocks of petroleum. Almost all jet fuels are derived from crude oil in refineries and are manufactured to tightly controlled specifications. Jet fuels typically account for around 6% of total global refinery fuel production.

Jet and aviation fuels are flammable when vaporised and have freezing points between -40˚C and -58˚C. Due to such low operating temperatures, each must be kept free of water to reduce the risk of frozen water blocking the fuel inlet pipes of aircraft.

Jet fuel detection – JP-8 Jet Propulsion

According to specification, the JP-8 may contain an AO (antioxidant) or MDA (metal deactivator) additive. To be able to add a metal deactivator to the JP-8 formula, according to regulations, express written authorisation from the purchaser and user of the product must be obtained.
The main characteristics are:

  • Fuel for military aviation.
  • Colourless or slightly yellow.
  • Density within the range of 6.47-7.01 lb/U.S. gallon (0.775 – 0.840 kg/L)
  • Flammable at temperatures above 100.4°F (38°C) in the presence of flames or sparks.
  • Freezing point -52.6°F (-47°C).

Jet fuel detection – JP-5 Jet Propulsion

A yellow kerosene-based jet fuel developed in 1952 for use in aircraft stationed aboard aircraft carriers, where the risk from fire is particularly great. JP-5 is a complex mixture of hydrocarbons, containing alkanes, naphthenes, and aromatic hydrocarbons that weighs 6.8 pounds per U.S. gallon (0.81 kg/l) and has a high flash point (min. 60 °C or 140 °F).
