Heating <span data-ogsc=\"rgb(17, 17, 17)\">diacetyl above certain temperatures significantly increases airborne concentrations and the potential for exposures above safe workplace limits.<\/span><span data-ogsc=\"black\" data-ogsb=\"white\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><strong>What are the Health Risks Associated with Diacetyl?<\/strong><span data-ogsc=\"rgb(14, 16, 26)\" data-ogsb=\"white\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p>Diacetyl vapours have been linked to &#8216;Bronchiolitis Obliterans&#8217; a rare but incapacitating lung disease characterised by swelling, inflammation and permanent scarring and narrowing of the airways.\u00a0<span data-ogsc=\"rgb(17, 17, 17)\">Airborne concentrations and the potential for exposures above safe workplace limits are significantly increased if flavour mixtures containing diacetyl, even at low concentrations (below 5%) are heated, added to hot processes or spray-dried.<\/span><span data-ogsc=\"black\" data-ogsb=\"white\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><strong>Who is at Risk from Diacetyl Exposure?<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Diacetyl poses a risk to those working in the food and beverage industry.\u00a0<span data-ogsc=\"rgb(17, 17, 17)\">Risk of exposure can occur during:<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><span data-ogsc=\"rgb(17, 17, 17)\">opening of diacetyl or flavouring containers<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span data-ogsc=\"rgb(17, 17, 17)\">decanting and weighing<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span data-ogsc=\"rgb(17, 17, 17)\">mixing<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span data-ogsc=\"rgb(17, 17, 17)\">spray drying to produce powdered mixtures\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span data-ogsc=\"rgb(17, 17, 17)\">packaging<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span data-ogsc=\"rgb(17, 17, 17)\">cleaning of vessels or spillages<\/span><span data-ogsc=\"rgb(17, 17, 17)\">.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>As part of the HSE Action Required steps, substituting diacetyl for a safer, alternative product is advised.<\/p>\n<p><strong>What are the Exposure Limits?<\/strong><span data-ogsc=\"rgb(14, 16, 26)\" data-ogsb=\"white\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-ogsc=\"rgb(17, 17, 17)\">WELs for diacetyl are at 20 parts per billion (ppb) or 0.02 parts per million (ppm) over an 8-hr time-weighted average (TWA) and 100 ppb or 0.10 ppm over a 15-min TWA period.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><strong>What&#8217;s the Solution?<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>WELs for diacetyl were published in\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.hse.gov.uk\/pubns\/books\/eh40.htm\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">EH40\/2005 Workplace Exposure Limits<\/a>. Limits are at 20 parts per billion (ppb) or 0.02 parts per million (ppm) over an 8-hr time weighted average (TWA) and 100 ppb or 0.10 ppm over a 15-min TWA period. Suppliers&#8217; safety data sheets for diacetyl or for mixtures containing diacetyl should list these WELs.\u00a0 the Control of Substances Hazardous to Health (COSHH) Regulations 2002 (as amended) require employers to ensure work-related exposure is assessed, prevented or adequately controlled so that it is below the WELs.<\/p>\n<p>Due to its low exposure limit, ION Science would recommend the Tiger XT with PPB sensitivity and a 10.6 eV lamp.
