As mentioned above, traditional PIDs can be affected by adverse environmental conditions such as those found at fire scenes i.e. dirt, water and humidity.\u00a0 The situation in the immediate aftermath of a fire is therefore not ideal and in particular, the presence of high humidity can disrupt PID measurements leading to false low or conversely high readings.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<p>Looking at <em>Diagram 1<\/em>, the presence of the porous membrane should be noted.\u00a0 It is made from a hydrophobic material which means that it rejects the ingress of water and mitigates the chance of low readings.<\/p>\n<p>To further deal with high humidity, the addition of a fence electrode <em>(also shown in Diagram 1.)<\/em> overcomes the possibility of high readings since it behaves as a conductive break and stops the excess current flow caused by the presence of high humidity and contamination which would otherwise lead to a false positive.<\/p>\n<div class=\"page\" title=\"Page 2\">\n<div class=\"section\">\n<div class=\"layoutArea\">\n<div class=\"column\">\n<p>The cause of low readings is because water vapour absorbs the photons normally released by ionisation within the sensor as can be seen in the simplified cross sections of a PID <em>(See diagram 2).<\/em><\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"wpb_text_column wpb_content_element \">\n<div class=\"wpb_wrapper\">\n<div class=\"page\" title=\"Page 3\">\n<div class=\"layoutArea\">\n<div class=\"column\">\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone wp-image-178413 size-full\" src=\"https:\/\/e7552ege7qf.exactdn.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/08\/humidity-pid-1-1-2.jpg?strip=all&resize=655%2C227\" alt=\"Effects of humidity on PID 1\" width=\"655\" height=\"227\" \/><em>Diagram 2.<\/em><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone wp-image-178414 size-full\" src=\"https:\/\/e7552ege7qf.exactdn.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/08\/humidity-pid-2-1-2.jpg?strip=all&resize=655%2C227\" alt=\"Effects of humidity on PID 2\" width=\"655\" height=\"227\" \/><em>Diagram 3.<\/em><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>The release of photons is what occurs during photoionisation, but the issue is that some of these photons are absorbed by water vapour, which worsens as humidity increases. Contamination can also build up between the electrodes effectively short-circuiting them, leading to a high, \u2018false positive\u2019 reading at high humidity with no <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Volatile_organic_compound\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">VOC<\/a> present i.e. &gt; 90% RH <em>(see Diagram 3.)<\/em><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n[\/vc_column_text][\/vc_column][\/vc_row][vc_row type=&#8221;in_container&#8221;
